Adult Day Program Recreation Leader
This paid internship requires minimum 9-month commitment.
Start date is flexible.
Schedule is Mon-Fri 9:00am-3:00pm.
AbilityPath has Day Programs throughout San Mateo County that offer community-based instruction for adult participants with developmental disabilities in our Community Access Program. You will receive on-the-job training by shadowing experienced instructors, then you be assigned a group to supervise, coach and mentor through daily training, recreation and social activities. We are looking for people with a “mentoring” mentality; People with a passion for teaching, coaching or training; Leaders who see others as having the potential to do great things when given the tools to succeed.
Primary job responsibilities:
- Provide engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction to participants to help them achieve their goals
- Utilize appropriate modification techniques to respond to challenging behaviors and support behavioral plans to increase engagement
- Complete documentation for tracking participant goals and comment on progress and achievement
- Supervise and assist participants during volunteer activities, paid work, classes, and other community activities
- Responsible for travel training participants using public transportation and the safety and well-being of participants while out on community outings
- Drive agency vehicles as needed (transporting participants to events, etc.)

Qualifications:
- Demonstrated interest and experience in social services, special education, psychology, recreation programming, human services or similar
- Experience working with adults with developmental disabilities is preferred, but not required
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; Strong customer service skills
- Strong computer skills, ability to check email daily, use an iPad and use a smart phone
- Positive outlook, enthusiasm, self-motivated and high energy
- Valid Driver License, clean driving record, ability to pass a driving test in a 9-passenger vehicle
- Drive agency vehicles as needed (transporting participants to events, etc.)

Pre-employment requirements include an ability to clear a criminal background check and obtain required medical clearances. We will also check professional (or academic) references and verify recent employment. You will be required to provide proof of eligibility to work in the US (we use e-Verify to process work authorization documents.)
Physical activity requirements include an ability to physically respond to people with special needs, an ability to lift/support at least 40 lbs as needed, an ability to walk, sit, stand, stoop, and bend frequently.
